The LMHS School


The LMHS (Lamdon Model High School) is the Indian association managing the operation of the school straddling the villages of Pibiting and Ufti.

Its objective is to reconcile a modern education while respecting local traditions, as included in the official program of the Ministry of Education for the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The school follows the same rules as State schools, the so-called "government schools".

Because of the unique climate of Zanskar, the school year starts in March and ends in November. Student vacations take place during the coldest months. Classes are given six days a week, Monday through Saturday, 10am through 3:30pm, in 35 minute sessions.

Approximately 315 students attend the school. 


Each year 30 students are admitted. Their selection is by lottery from about 100 candidates, given the strong popularity of the school throughout Zanskar. At least one opening is reserved for the minority Moslem community concentrated in the only town of Padum (population of less than 1,500).

There are 12 classes :
- Kindergarten, Lower (age 4) and Upper (age 5)
- Grades 1 through 10 corresponding to elementary, middle school and the first two years of high school in America.
We are aiming at parity (50-50%) between boys and girls, currently at 53-47%.

Subjects taught include:
- Math
- Sciences
- History
- Geography
- Social Studies - 4 Languages with 4 different alphabets, including:
- Bodhi, a Tibetan dialect prevalent in Ladakh and Zanskar
- Urdu, the administrative language of Jammu & Kashmir
- Hindi and English, the two official languages of India



Students who graduate obtain a "Secondary School Certificate" and have the option of finishing high school (class 11 and 12) at a government school in Padum, Zanskar. Yet 80% of them elect to move to far away Jammu for a better education, including university. Close to 200 of LMHS graduates are currently studying there, helping each other within Lex-Saz (Lamdon ex-Students Association Zanskar), an active support group run exclusively by alumni, without a registration fee.

The teaching staff includes some 20 teachers, two thirds of them from outside Zanskar. Recruiting qualified teachers is an ongoing challenge in this isolated area: also because the best yield to the siren song of government schools: a superior compensation package, lack of supervision hence a significantly less work schedule.

Principal and teachers are assisted by 5 staff members regarding supplies, building maintenance, general order and security.
